The people behind Ruya

Ruya was built by people who spent years inside hospital facilities teams, not by a software company that decided healthcare looked like a good market. Here is who is building it.

Why Ruya exists

For six years I worked inside hospital facilities. The pattern never changed. Floor plans existed. Updates were requested. Everyone assumed someone else was handling it. Then the surveyors arrived, and the question was always the same: which version is current?

In 2020 I finished my job at a hospital by solving myself out of it. The phone did not stop ringing. Directors at other systems were calling with the same problem. One of them was driving three hours back to his office just to open a floor plan on his desktop. Every time. I went looking for something better. There was not one.

So I built it. Bootstrapped, with no outside money, because I did not want anyone deciding what the product should be before the people using it did. Three years in stealth. MyMichigan Health signed in 2024 and had results in two weeks.

Rashad grew up in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia watching a desert turn into a city, and has been in Chicago since he started his career as an architectural draftsman. He was on the design teams for NATO headquarters in Belgium and Burj Dubai, and spent six years inside hospital facilities, most recently at Northwestern Medicine. Along the way he built his own BIM consulting practice, and Ruya is the fourth company he has started. He founded it in 2020 and bootstrapped it, and now leads a remote team of more than fifteen people across the United States.

What do I have? How am I using it? What condition is it in? Twenty years on, most systems still cannot answer all three.

Ken is a civil engineer from the great University of Maryland. He cut his teeth leading heavy mechanical construction projects along the East Coast and in the Caribbean, until a pump manufacturer recruited him to the Midwest for a few years of rotating equipment sales, domestic and international. His work in healthcare started in 2004, and he has spent the two decades since helping hospitals answer those three questions. Working that closely with facility teams is what pushed him toward helping create innovative solutions to manage compliance. He has not stopped asking how to make the job easier for the people doing it.
